DEF or SCR warning lights

How to Confirm the DEF Doser Before Replacing It

1. Save the complete fault-code record

Connect the proper diagnostic software and scan every module. Save active, inactive and pending faults before clearing them.

4. Verify the supply side

Confirm that the system primes correctly and reaches the specified pressure. Review pressure readings during the commanded test.

Low supply pressure may point toward:

  • Air entering the system

The doser cannot deliver the correct quantity without a stable supply.

5. Run the correct DEF quantity test

Remove or position the dosing unit only as directed by the applicable service procedure. Capture the discharged fluid in approved measuring equipment.

Published procedures for certain DD15 emissions generations use a specified output range during the test. That figure should not be applied blindly to every model year. Verify the current specification by engine serial number before making a replacement decision.

Inspect the spray at the same time. A healthy pattern should be controlled and evenly atomized. Dripping, delayed shutoff or a distorted stream requires further investigation.

Safety before a parked test

Park outdoors on level ground. Set the parking brake and chock the wheels. Keep people, dry grass, spilled fluids and other combustible materials away from the exhaust.

Regeneration creates extreme exhaust temperatures. Exhaust gases are also toxic in enclosed areas.

6. Review NOx and temperature data

If quantity and pressure pass, do not replace the doser simply because conversion remains low.

A DEF doser problem primarily affects SCR operation and NOx reduction. The hydrocarbon fuel doser plays the more direct role in generating heat for DPF regeneration.

Still, the systems work together. Active aftertreatment faults can interrupt tests, trigger warning lamps and lead to progressive operating restrictions.

Repeated or failed regens should lead to a broader diagnosis. Check exhaust temperature, fuel-doser operation, soot load, pressure readings, air handling and the condition of the DOC and DPF.
